PnL Meaning: How to Track Your Crypto Trading Results
PnL Meaning is one of the first things you notice on any trading dashboard. It stands for profit and loss, and it shows whether your trades are making money or losing it. In crypto, where prices move fast, understanding this number helps you stay in control instead of guessing how you're doing.
Realized vs Unrealized PnL
There are two types you need to know.
Unrealized PnL
This is the profit or loss on trades that are still open. If you bought Bitcoin and the price goes up, you'll see a profit. But it's not locked in yet. If the market turns, that number can drop just as quickly.
Realized PnL
This is what you get after closing a trade. Once you sell or exit the position, the result is final and added to your balance.
How to Calculate PnL
PnL depends on price movement, position direction, and leverage.
PnL is directly affected by leverage. If you're not fully clear on how leverage works, read this guide: What is Leverage Trading in Crypto
For long positions:
PnL % = (Exit Price / Entry Price − 1) × 100 × Leverage
For short positions:
PnL % = (−1) × (Exit Price / Entry Price − 1) × 100 × Leverage
PnL amount = PnL % × Order amount
Trading fees are applied separately and reduce your final result.

Why PnL Tracking Matters
A lot of traders focus only on the dollar amount. That's not enough. Percentages give you a clearer picture. A +20 percent trade tells you more than +$200, especially when position sizes vary.
Tracking your PnL helps you:
- See which trades or coins actually work for you
- Cut losses before they get too big
- Measure your performance over time
Real Example
Say you open a long on Ethereum at $2,500 with an order amount of $1,000 and 10x leverage.
If price moves to $2,700:
- Price change: +8 percent
- PnL: about +80 percent → +$800 before fees
If price drops to $2,400:
- Price change: −4 percent
- PnL: about −40 percent → −$400
Summary
PnL is one of the most important numbers on your screen. Unrealized PnL shows what's happening right now. Realized PnL shows your actual results. Watch both. When you understand how they work, it's easier to stay calm and make better decisions.
